THREDDY
Capstone Project
Project Overview:
During this project, I created a personal brand containing obtainable deliverables.
I decided to create "Threddy" which is a combination of "Thread", commonly used in fiber arts, and "Eddy", my last name.
Over twelve weeks, I created a Branding Style Guide, a Crocheted Logo, a Tote Bag, Stickers, Business Cards, Embroidered T-Shirt, and a Process Scrapbook. Additionally, we were tasked with creating an exhibition that would be displayed during the ISU GD Senior Show at the end of the twelve weeks, documenting what we made.
Overall, I wanted this project to be a representation of not only myself but my family as well. They have always been involved in creative activities and have passed down a vast array of knowledge within handmade crafts! I loved having the opportunity to use things I have learned from them in my own way. Threddy is not only a personal brand for myself but a project dedicated to my Grandma Esther, who taught me quilting, my Mom, who taught me crochet, and my Dad, who showed me the possibilities within mixed-media collage.
Visual Language:
I began the project by collecting visual inspiration that would define the direction of my ideas. Overall, my inspiration came from typography stitching, hand quilting, and colorful imagery! I knew from the beginning that I wanted to implement handmade crafts throughout the entire project. I was excited to find a lot of great examples of mixed-media collage-style fiber crafts, as this was something I wanted to experiment with as well.
Color Palette:
I based my color palette around a warm color scheme as I wanted the design to feel nostalgic and comforting.
Logo For Pixelation Treatment:
I separated the letters so I could individually crochet them in different colors. Before crocheting them, I pixelated the files to view the letters on a grid and ensure each piece would be the same size. I aimed to create a banner/logo design for a booth/exhibit piece.
Tote Bag Color Test:
I created this tote bag using similar yarns to my color palette to act as a visual value test for how the colors would look together. I wanted the text to be visible from far away, so I made sure there was a strong contrast between the colors when making the final design.
Crocheted Logo & Process:
Once I had completed the grid/pixelation system and tote test, I began individually crocheting the letters. The entire process took a little over a week and consisted of 7,840 stitches. When all the letters were done, I wet-blocked the entire thing to lay flat. Lastly, I backed the letters and added varying ribbon frames to create a piece for the final show. See the process below:
Stickers:
I created stickers in ProCreate to have at my capstone show/booth. These were loosely based on the logo but still illustrative and exciting. To further enhance the overall stickers, I had them printed on pixi-glitter and holographic paper!
